Teivo Teivainen: How Finns Party’s Racist Turn Might Shake Government of Finland?

Posted on June 10, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Now it’s real. Finland’s government includes a party that just elected a person convicted for a racist crime (ethnic agitation) as its new leader. The question is obviously not simply about Jussi Halla-aho’s criminal record, but that the party has decided to take a turn away from its agrarian populist roots and toward racism.

What will happen next?

The leaders of other governmental parties have been unwilling to comment on this before the Finns Party election, but now they will have to start talking.

Read the original op-ed piece here.

Many eyes are on Kokoomus, the most traditional right-wing party of Finland and one of the three governmental parties. Its newly elected and quite popular Mayor of Helsinki, Jan Vapaavuori, has been one of the most explicit political leaders on this issue: Kokoomus should not be in the same government with Halla-aho. Will the desire to keep the government together make the leadership of Kokoomus opt for a more pragmatic solution?

The Centre Party has more to lose if the government breaks down. It has the prime minister’s post but would be unlikely to do all that well in a new election. One possible option is let go of Finns Party but find a couple of smaller parties to join the government and avoid new election.

Overall, most commentators do not seem to find new election very likely.

Whatever else happens, Finland is now likely to get a new Foreign Minister. Halla-aho has been very explicit that Timo Soini, the leader of the party for decades, has to step down also as a minister. Had Sampo Terho, Halla-aho’s main contender, been elected, Soini would probably have continued as minister.

More generally, the election of Jussi Halla-aho can be considered a sad end for the long and in many ways successful career of Timo Soini as the leader of Finns Party.

Among leftist commentators, opinions about the desirability of Halla-aho’s election have been divided. Some say that since both of the main candidates, Terho and Halla-aho, are almost equally racist or otherwise right-wing anyway, it is better to get the more explicitly racist person in front.

Compared to Terho, Halla-aho’s election is more likely to shake the current right-wing government of Finland and therefore cause trouble for the massive transformation (privatization) of health care that the government has been pushing through. Therefore, some leftists say, it is preferable to have Halla-aho in charge of the Finns Party.

These are simply some of the very first impressions immediately after the vote at the meeting of the Finns Party. The meeting still goes on, and Jussi Halla-aho is expected to give a major speech tomorrow Sunday. It is possible that the governmental coalition partners want to wait and see what he says. In any case, they will need to take a stand soon.

Posted on June 6, 2017 by Reija Härkönen

”Vaikea on mitään neuvoja antaa, itsekin niitä tarvitsisin.

(Announcement) 2017 Summer School Migration in Southern Europe: Solidarity, Crisis and Beyond

Posted on May 27, 2017 by Migrant Tales

This seven-day course “Migration in Southern Europe: Solidarity, Crisis and Beyond” will investigate the developments, challenges and the impact of the migration and refugee crisis on southern European societies and on migrant populations. It will also explore the prospects for improving the current management of issues and relevant social policies.

In conjunction with the lectures and seminars, the program includes a full-day of study visits to facilities and organizations in the Attica region that receive and support refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Athens provides an ultimate setting for carrying out this program, as it comprises the main city of temporary or permanent stay for immigrants and refugees in Greece, and offers a unique environment that facilitates participants’ deeper engagement with the issues at hand.

To Whom it is Addressed

As this program is interdisciplinary in nature, it is open to all disciplines (such as Sociology, Social Policy, International Relations, Human Rights, Economics et al.) and applicants are welcome from the undergraduate level of studies and up, including but not limited to postgraduate students, PhD candidates, researchers, NGOs professionals. Doctoral students and researchers will have the opportunity to present their PhD/research at the PhD Seminar.

Muhammed Shire and Johanna Ennser-Kananen: “Your Finnish is not good enough” and other myths migrants face on the job market

Posted on May 6, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Migrant Tales insight: I would like to personally thank Muhammed Shire and Johanna Ennser-Kananen for shedding light on some age-old myths surrounding migrants and minorities in Finland. As sensible people interested in the best proactive solutions that are in line with our Nordic welfare state values, we should not only look at ways of challenging such myths but replacing them with effective solutions.

Like most problems facing our ever-growing culturally diverse community, myths and blame are placed on us for not “trying hard enough” or “for not knowing enough” to land that job. Even our integration act, which came into force in 2011, makes no mention about racism and discrimination as obstacles to adaption because it plays down the impact of such social ills. Thus the burden of proof continues to be unfairly dumped on migrants and members of the minority community.

We must change the order of things not only because discrimination and racism ruins lives and are costly, but because we must live up to our Nordic values concerning fair and equal treatment. Not doing so or leaving such matters to chance is synonymous to shooting oneself in the leg.

If you are a migrant who has applied for educational programs or jobs, chances are that you have heard some of the following myths. In this article, we debunk them by explaining their racist nature.

Finland has one of the highest disparities between EU and non-EU citizens. For more information go to Eurostat

Myth #1: “Your Finnish is not good enough for alternative options.”

Of course we can’t and don’t want to deny the important role language can play in integration and participation processes. However, the common belief that high proficiency in the socially dominant (in our case Finnish) language will automatically open doors to professional or educational success is overly simplistic and ample research exists that debunks this myth (see, for example, Ennser-Kananen & Pettitt, under review; Krumm & Plutzar, 2008). When migrants apply for jobs, language oftentimes becomes a substitute for race, ethnicity, or other social factors like gender and religion. This happens, for instance, when employers argue (and even convince themselves) that qualified applicants with migration backgrounds “do not meet their language demands” without adequately assessing their (often multilingual) language skills and without considering or supporting their language development on the job. Arguments based on “insufficient Finnish proficiency” are easy to make because they appear to be more politically correct than those based on race, religion, or gender. In addition, they are difficult to assess for the average person without training in language acquisition, so that applicants are often left with arguments that are not valid or not convincingly supported by linguistic evidence.

If you are faced with such an argument (“your Finnish is not good enough”), ask for exact explanations of the linguistic demands for the job or program you are applying and, importantly, ask for evidence of your failure to meet them. In other words, someone needs to explain to you what the Finnish language requirements are and why they are sure that you don’t meet them. Your (former) language teachers can be excellent allies in this process. They understand language assessment, especially of multilingual language learners, and usually have experience in assessing and advocating for you. Most importantly, they understand language proficiency in the context of your overall experience at school and in Finland. In addition to your teachers, the co-author of this article, Johanna Ennser-Kananen ([email protected]), is also happy to advise you in such situations. When you request explanations and evidence from an employer, you might also want to inquire about the possibility to develop your language skills on the job. Employers who are genuinely interested in you will sometimes find ways for you to to develop your Finnish as part of your workload. (Yes, it happens! And it should happen more.) In case you do not receive all the information you ask for, consider contacting Migrant Tales ([email protected]) for advice on this matter and potentially filing a report on discrimination.

Seiska: Keuruu’s reception center manager Rasul Azizan relieved of duties by Red Cross due to “loss of confidence”

Posted on May 4, 2017 by Migrant Tales

The manager of the Keuruu asylum reception center, Rasul Azizan, has been relieved of his duties by his employer the Red Cross due to “loss of confidence,” according to Seiska. In May last year, Deputy Manager Jari Sillantie of the Kolari asylum reception center was sacked by the Red Cross because “he wasn’t suited for the job.”

The police service at Keuruu confirmed to the magazine that the Red Cross has filed criminal charges against Azizan and the police will decide whether to press charges.

Read the original posting here.

Seiska alleges in the story that Azizan is suspected of misusing funds, among another charge.

Emmanuel Macron on Ranskan ja EU:n toivo

Posted on April 24, 2017 by Ana María Gutiérrez Sorainen

An Iraqi asylum seeker in Finland tells us how he was “exploited” for a month by a Porvoo-based company called A-T Puhdistus

Posted on April 23, 2017 by Migrant Tales

One matter is clear when you live in a society and the country’s institutions see asylum seekers as inferior human beings we leave the door open to all kinds of abuse. A good example of how little power asylum seekers have in Finland is the  family of nine that has been locked up at the Joutseno immigration removal center. If an asylum seeker is lucky enough to get work, that too can become an exercise in exploitation.

Not only are white Finns exploiting asylum seekers, but foreigners as well who have lived in Finland for a long time and who should know better.

Go to website here.

One case that was reported to the police was by Jihad Al Baghdadi, an asylum seeker from Iraq who was hired to work in March for A-T Puhditus, a Porvoo-based company that does subcontracting work for construction companies.

Al Baghdadi said that he wants us to publish this story about what happened to him at A-T Puhdistus because he doesn’t  “give a shit anymore” what happens to him.

Fazerin logo on laitettu Kärkkäisen proagandalehteen ilman lupaa

Posted on April 23, 2017 by Ana María Gutiérrez Sorainen

Eilen julkaisin tänne Migran Tales -julkaisussa seuraava kirjoitus:

Moneen kotiin on tullut Juha Kärkkäisen oman kaupan ilmaisjakelumainoslehti KauppaSuomi.

Ilmaisjakelulehdessä on eri tunnettujen yritysten logoja.

Iittala, Sievi, Sako, Savotta, Fazer, Opal, Fiskars, Airam, Lego, Hackman, Espirit, Timberlan.

Seuraavien yritysten mainokset löytyvät samasta ilmaisjakelulehdestä:

Salvos, Sailioykkoset, Jetta, Kymppi-remontit.

Tänään sain tietää, että Fazer on lähettänyt viestin Migrant Talesin päätoimittajalle. Fazerin logo on laitettu Kärkkäisen propagandalehteen ilman Fazerin lupaa. Tänään sain tietää, että Fazer on lähettänyt viestin Migrant Talesin päätoimittajalle. Fazerin logo on laitettu Kärkkäisen propagandalehteen ilman Fazerin lupaa.

Kärkkäisen suomalaisuuden määritelmä on rajallinen.
