Iraqi asylum seeker being put on plane and deported today

Posted on February 1, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Migrant Tales has learned of a new deportation today at around 7 pm Tuesday from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, according to a video below posted on social media sites.

“This terrifies me because it proves to me that human rights don’t apply to us,” an asylum seeker said. “You really don’t know where you’ll be in Finland the next day or even next hour.”

Iraqi Ambassador to Finland, Matheel Dhayif Al-Sabti, told Migrant Tales earlier this month that “Iraq will not accept forced deportations.”

Restrictions by the defense forces on dual nationals is discriminatory and should be forcefully rejected

Posted on January 31, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Should it surprise us that a member of an anti-immigration party like the Perussuomalaiset (PS)* is suspicious of dual citizens? Add to the latter that the person who is suspicious is Defense Minister Jussi Niinistö, who is known for his far-right sympathies.

According to information obtained by YLE,  and if the story is true, the Finnish defense forces has begun to place restrictions on conscripts who are dual citizens of Finland and Russia. YLE said that no such guidelines existed before.

Finland has considered limiting the role of dual nationals in key public posts for years but has not asked if this is unconstitutional.

YLE reported that despite some circles wanting to limit the role of people with dual citizenship in the army, there is no legislation that permits such restrictions from taking place now. The finance ministry is, however, working on such legislative reforms.

Said Niinistö in YLE:

“I personally take the view that when we talk about professional military positions, there are weighty reasons excluding dual nationality. There will now be a review to clarify this. The required proposals will be prepared for legislation on the Defence Forces on how national security can be improved in filling professional military positions, and when an individual applies for training leading to a professional officer’s commission.”

One of the biggest unanswered questions of the YLE story concerning dual nationals is if it is discriminatory.

Detained Iraqi asylum seeker SH: “I hope to go back to work”

Posted on January 30, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Today Iraqi asylum seeker SH, who was detained with KM on January 6, has been detained at Helsinki’s Metsälä immigration removal center for 24 days. SH said that he was interviewed today by the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) concerning his new asylum application.

“We didn’t talk about my release from here because that wasn’t the aim of the interview with Migri,” he said by phone. “My lawyer will apply for a new work permit because the existing one expires on February 10.”

SH believes that he’ll be released after the lawyer proves to the authorities that there is no reason for keeping him detained.

A letter to the Prime Minister of Finland Juha Sipilä: “I plead with you so I can have my fiancé back at my side”

Posted on January 29, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Honorable Prime Minister,

I turn to you because my fiancé was detained and locked up by the police. He is in danger of being deported back to Iraq from Finland.

Allow me to introduce myself: I’m a Finnish woman who lives in the region of Varsinais-Suomi with two children, I’m pregnant and want to get married. Honorable Prime Minister, I’m stricken with deep sadness today because I miss my fiancé so much. Even if we’re separated, we sleep together with the children. Both of us have our mobile phones next to us so we can see our faces thanks to a videophone application.

We met the first time at the garden of my house. My future fiancé appeared with different colored roses. He built a lighted statue from a watering can. My fiancé is hard-working, loyal and a good construction worker, gardener and remodels homes. In his former homeland, he was a stonemason who worked with marble.

The painting, which was made by the author, is called “Apstrakt.”

He is my true love, a father to my children and a source of pride for my parents. We first lived in a paradise contentedly but then everything turned into a nightmare in January, when the police took him away from me when we went to the police station to find out the decision of the district court concerning his asylum case. We were very stressed before visiting the police and asked ourselves near-constantly if the appeal was accepted or not. We believed that the court would rule in our favor but the opposite happened.

DH’s Finnish fiancée speaks about his detention and possible deportation to Iraq: “This is so nerve-racking and unfair!”

Posted on January 25, 2017 by Migrant Tales

The Supermen

DH was detained on Sunday by the police in Pori and his fiancée, who is eight weeks pregnant, claims that the police set up a trap for her partner.

“We asked the police on the phone if they could read the decision [by the district court],” she said. “They said we had to go to the police station to get the answer. When we went there, they detained DH.”

According to DH’s fiancée, the second rejection for asylum was received so late that there was no time to appeal the decision to the supreme district court.

DH’s fiancée is a graphic artist. This painting by her is called “Waiting for you.”

“The police in Pori treated DH and my family in a very rude and racist manner,” she said. “His rights were breached. He was forced to undress and not allowed to make any phone calls or take visits [while in Pori].”

CORRECTION: Sixth Iraqi asylum seeker detained by police facing deportation to Iraq

Posted on January 25, 2017 by Migrant Tales

Migrant Tales has learned of a new case of an Iraqi asylum seeker, DH, who was detained Sunday in Pori and is now awaiting deportation to Iraq* at the Metsälä detention center. It is the sixth detention that comes to our attention since January 6.

*An earlier story incorrectly stated that DH was awaiting deportation to Turkey, his former home and where some of his relatives live. DH faces deportation to Iraq.

He lives in Pori with a Finnish woman who is eight-weeks pregnant.

According to his partner, the police detained him without any warning at 10 am Sunday, DH was mistreated physically by the police his partner said.

“The judge sided with the police,” she continued, “claiming that it was DH that had tried to take his passport from the police’s hand.”

We will report on this newest case of another Iraqi asylum seeker who faces deportation to Iraq in two weeks.

DH is the latest Iraqi to be detained by the police. He awaits deportation to Turkey.

UPDATED (7:32 am): Iraqi asylum seeker MS’ deportation from Oulu Airport in Finland postponed due to diorderly behavior

Posted on January 24, 2017 by Migrant Tales

UPDATED (7:35 am): Iraqi asylum seeker MS’ deportation from Oulu Airport in Finland to Iraq was postponed Tuesday because he wasn’t permitted to board the plane by the pilot in command due to his disorderly behavior.

A reader sent us the following information about what social media sites wrote about what happened Tuesday. Here is an edited version of the message to Migrant Tales:

MS wasn’t allowed to board the flight. He shouted and struggled [with the police] and was refused entry on the plane by the captain. His hands and legs were tied and placed him on the ground with his stomach pressed on the ground. They [police] took him back to a cell in Oulu and he was then transferred to the Metsälä detention center in Helsinki. He is now in Metsälä. This person is really brave and I hope he’ll be freed soon. It’s so sad to see how they treat him like a criminal.

We wrote earlier Tuesday:

Migrant Tales has access to a video published in the Facebook group called Suomi ja Pakolaiset where MS is awaiting deportation inside a police van at Oulu Airport in northern Finland. MS was detained by the police on Friday.

MS states in a video at the airport that some Iraqis have wrongly accused him of committing a crime. Whenever an Iraqi is going to be deported, its customary that some Iraqis wrongly believe that the person is being deported because he committed a crime.

In this case, MS has not committed any crime, according to him.

He said that while he was speaking inside the police van at the airport, there was a camera recording him and spraying some substance [possibly a sedative] to calm him down. “And it smells bad,” he added. MS asks why he’s being deported even if there is no deportation order. “Let’s see what will happen,” he said. “I’ll be in Baghdad soon.”

From a video that was taken by MS today inside a police van at Oulu Airport.

MS inside the police van talking about his last moments before being deported to Iraq.
