Fighting racism in Finland the Ricky Ghansah way

Posted on May 22, 2013 by Migrant Tales

Ricky Ghansah is a young African who was being harassed by a “super racist”at a Helsinki bus stop. On entering the bus, Ghansah noticed that the man had forgotten at home his wallet and bus pass. He went to the bus driver and paid the man’s ticket.

Kuvankaappaus 2013-5-22 kello 18.42.38

Read Facebook thread here.

The man, who had called Ghansah racist names, came up to him and thanked him for buying the ticket. He told the  man that his show of gratitude doesn’t mean much to him but if he apologized that would.

The man then apologized for his behavior. Ghansah asked if he could apologize a little louder so the whole bus could hear him. He did and the bus passengers clapped their hands in approval at what had happened.

It was a very effective way to handle such a horrible situation. A woman passenger who sat next to Ghansah said that he had handled the situation very well.

Possibly the man who insulted Ghansah is a racist manner will think twice the next time he opens his mouth.

I read this this morning and I had to say: he handled it very well. I probably could have not act like a “bigger man” in the situation like that or handle it any better myself.

I do find it weird how Iltasanomat wrote about it. It says that Ricky “humiliated” the drunk man. Isn’t apology a normal thing to do after acting like that? Yes, the drunk probably did feel ashamed, but I wouldn’t say Ricky tried to “humiliate” him. Newspapers and their sensationalism…

Umm yes he did try to humiliate him by demanding him to repeat his apology a little louder so the whole bus could hear it. The point was just that humiliation as the guy hadn’t caused any problems to any other passengers.

Anyway no articles on what happened in London yesterday Enrique with 2 Black Muslims beheading an army soldier in the middle of a busy street and saying he deserved it for the killings of Muslims in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars? You probably think what happened to Ricky Ghansah was worse than what that dead solider went through. So much for a balanced blog on events concerning minorities!

Klay_immigrant, I think it’s lowly of you to suggest that we’re in a conspiracy to cover up what happened in London with the death of the two soldiers. It’s been a busy week at my paying job and I haven’t had the time to comment on everything you think we should. We are primarily a forum that writes about Finland and about other countries if we have time.

Your attack of MT shows where you are coming from politically. The loss of any human life is despicable and unacceptable. The two soldiers in London, like the hundreds of thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan, died thanks to Western intervention.

Your approach to the issue is absurd. You try to pull the reverse-racism argument to justify the real nasty kind of racism.

Klay is an uncle Tom who is ashamed of his Moslem origins and refuses to use his given name for that reason. This latest contribution is par for the course. I have my doubts about this story. There is many extremenly similiar version around the internet.

    Lets see.

At 1:15, Ricky says that the man has no wallet and no money. But, at 4:00 He says that the man looked into his wallet and had nothing in there.

“Ylen toimittaja–uutispäällikkö Jarno Liski kertoi torstaina Twitterissä tavoitelleensa tarinan kertonutta poikaa.”

“Liskin mukaan poika ei osaa kertoa sattumukselle tarkempaa aikaa, kuin (viime perjantaina) kello 18–21. Yle on pyytänyt Pohjolan Liikennettä käymään tältä pohjalta läpi linjaa 58 ajaneet kuljettajat.”

I seriously doubt anyone is going to work as Ricky mentioned, intoxicated beetween 18-21.

I agree Jssk. Where are the witnesses to verify this story. And the fact this guy telling anyone and everyone who would listen brings suspicion as to whether this is just a made up story to bring attention to himself and make people think what a hero and great guy he is and massage his ego. I have my doubts.

A man drunk or not, waiting in line for the bus, stepping onto the bus then realising he has no wallet or bus pass (meaning left home without it) is highly unlikely first of all. Then allowing the person he just abused to pay for him after that is even more unlikely. After all most people wouldn’t even allow due to politeness a random stranger to pay for them let alone a person they don’t like when they can just go home (a short distance otherwise how did he get to the bus stop in the first place) and get the wallet and bus pass.

I dont really share Enriques ideals but i wouldnt blame him at all for not exclusively reporting about this beheading attack. Its not the purpose of this blog to apologise for crimes that immigrants have done in my opinion, since its dedicated to take a look on the problems immigrants face and expose them (i say this without taking a stance on how well this is done)

If you want to share stories about African immigration problems with MT, we’d be happy to consider them for publication.

So basically this is anti-white blog.

My wife sat in a bar last weekend and listened to white Finns complaining about niggers in Finland, about having to ‘clean’ for them (one of them was a cleaner) and that the ‘reversal’ in the roles was just WRONG and that all immigrants just want the best flats, best TVs etc. (not that Finns want the best of anything). These people are very clearly ‘anti-black’. This is the kind of thing that we want to discuss and highlight. If you think that makes us ‘anti-white’, then go ahead and think that. We can’t stop you hanging off a flagpole and shouting inane obscenities at us.

But if you want to know the truth, we are not ‘anti-white’, we are anti-racism. I know that’s a difficult one to swallow. I know that means that you just have to find some way to make people believe that we are therefore against Finns or against whites, but that’s just not true. This ‘against’ stuff is the problem. That’s the problem with hate speech and hate politics, it sets people against each other on the flimsiest of pretexts. We want less of that, not more.

And yet Dana has frequently pointed out in her comments too that she has encountered racism also among blacks. Selective memory, Yossie? I’ve lost count of the times that I’ve corrected the notion that racism is specifically something that whites do only. But correcting you is not enough. You say these things because it gives a shortcut way of undermining the anti-racism message of this blog. You do this Yossie because you are a racist and you hate the idea of a blog out there that challenges your kind of racist thinking. Your comments today are pretty darn illustrative.

Its always “white priviledege” But how the hell is it in Africa? Asia? Does whites have priviledge there or is it the natives prefering their own ethnic group speaking the same language? Term “white priviledge” is one way you want blame whites. Else you would be speaking about native priviledge or something similar.

This is a fair point. It is much more accurate to talk about privilege that is held by whites. In some countries of Africa the privilege is held in some cases by blacks. Yet even though there are places like South Africa, where the poor white minorities are suffering from discrimination, the proportion of wealth held by blacks hasn’t actually changed (20%).

The other obvious issue is why do we have to start talking about Africa and Asia in order to fix problems here in Finland, Yossie?

It’s not about blaming whites. How many times do we have to say this before you actually open your lug holes and start trying to engage with the REAL debate that is going on here?

“The two soldiers in London, like the hundreds of thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan, died thanks to Western intervention”

I think there is some confusion here. One soldier died. He was not beheaded, as some news outlets reported, although it was attempted. He died because of the crazed actions of some radicalised individuals who happen to be Muslims and who were sold the story that the West is against Muslims, as opposed to being at war against specific terrorist groups.

The response of many Westerners to this extremist threat is to propogate their own extremism by suggesting that the problem is Islam and not political terrorism. By saying these things, they lay the foundation for a counter-political terrorism that seeks to terrorise Muslims in Europe. That is unacceptable and foolish in the extreme.

However, Enrique I think we cannot say these things happened because of Western intervention. Ultimately, the individuals involved must be held responsible. They were not ‘soldiers’, even if they pretend to themselves that they are.

In the UK, a majority were actually against the interventions in question. As a response to global terrorism, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will probably go down in history as a mistake. And many peole in the West realise that.

To be fair, it is partly true what Yossie says. I would not go that far and say MT is “anti-white hate blog” or people hate white Finns, but it feels little bit one-sided sometimes. MT reports almost all the incidents when the victim is an immigrant/minority and the assaulter is white native, but never reports when the roles are other way around. It gives too simplistic view of the problems in Finland related to racism and immigration.

Well, let’s see if that can be addressed in the future then. We’ll discuss it (MT editors) as an editorial issue in the near future. Just to outline the current position – the media in Finland have in the past been quick to jump on immigrants committing crime, and this negative press, in the absence of positive news, can easily give the wrong picture. On the other hand, the position that MT serves is to try to increase awareness of problems of racism and integration from the point of view of immigrants, and not necessarily from the point of view of native Finns. That is not to say the views of Finns are not important, they are, and we discuss them constantly through the comments, which we for the most part encourage. But this blog aims to give a voice to immigrants. That naturally will skew the stories.

But these stories are not intended to give the ‘whole’ picture of life in Finland and neither should it have to. It is to give voice to some of the most marginalised and stigmatised people in Finnish society, as well as to tackle racism in general.

Fundamentallly, the problem of immigrants is that many of them are already being defamed as groups, with stories about crime used in this defamation, and so us seeking stories where immigrants are perpetrators could very easily be seen to merely perpetuate this defamation rather than challenging it. This is not denying criminality exists in the migrant population, but simply rejecting the notion that it is our responsibility to give stories of immigrant crime to somehow ‘balance’ stories about racism or an abuse of immigrants.

The difficulty is that whenever anyone in the public space starts to talk about racism, inevitably the accusation is made that they MUST be anti-this or anti-that because they are not reporting on racism or ‘crime’ that works in the opposite direction. The difficulty that I see with that is that the discussion moves away from human rights and equal citizenship towards the notion that ‘racism’ is somehow inherent, that racism as an issue in Finland does not therefore need to be addressed, or that there is no moral basis for discussing racism because ‘they are as bad as we are’. That makes the status of immgirants in Finland an issue of ‘teams’, where each individual is being held responsible for the actions of their team. We are not holding ALL Finns responsible for racism anymore than I think all Muslims should be held responsible for the actions of a few or likewise with immigrants. The notion of ‘teams’ of nationalities, ethnicities or religions undermines INDIVIDUAL human rights. And that is the foundation of my thinking and my opposition to defaming groups.

It is important that we are not seen to defame Finns as a group. This is not our intention and it should not be seen as our actual effect. But short of constantly stating that we are not characterising all Finns when we talk about racism, and challenging posters and commentators that do lump all Finns into one bag, I really don’t know what we can legitimately do to correct this perception. The reality is also that some obviously racist groups will do and say anything that seems to invalidate criticisms of racism and especially of racist politians or political groupings. When this is the case, when the criticism is following a clear agenda of defamation of us here at Migrant Tales, there is not much to be done short of barring them, simply because it doesn’t matter what you say, as long as you take up the issue of racism, they will target you and your reputation with such accusations.

Having said that, the point is valid that the ‘problems’ of immigration are also those where immigrants get involved in criminal behaviour, whether through deprivation, through different cultural expectations, through marginalisation or whatever – it is clearly to our benefit to understand these factors.

The MT editors will report back after some discussion on this point.
