Migrant Tales is the oldest antiracist blog in Finland founded in 2007. We have a wealth of material collected during those years that should not be forgotten. Welcome to Migrant Tales oldies.

This is an awkward and offensive ad by Wille Rydman who doctored his face brown to look like a migrant, claiming he is helping migrants (Sic!). The person standing behind Rydman is Mukhtar Abib (see message below).

My Messenger message fo Mukhtar Abib: “Hi Mukhtar, I’m Enrique Tessieri from Migrant Tales (www.migranttales.net). What a turn of events in the Wille Rydman case. It would be great to hear your views, considering that you supported him in the 2011 elections. Best regards, Enrique Tessieri, 040 8400773.” He never replied.

Wille Rydman claims that he dares to speak his mind and to make what he says a reality. Let’s see below some of his scandalous quotes.
Racist quotes by Rydman uncovered by Helsingin Sanomat:
In those messages, Rydman called asylum seekers who came in 2015 “desert monkeys” and used other racist words for blacks, Muslims, and Jews. He wrote that a certain flower, the lilly of the valley, spreads and multiplies like Somalis. Rydman said he’d be ready to forbid the person wearing the hijab instead of the veil.
Rydman ran into problems a year earlier in 2022 when Helsingin Sanomat published an investigative story where a number of young women, some of whom were minors, claimed they were harassed by him.
The scandal caused Rydman to be suspended from the National Coalition party. He later joined the Perussuomalaiset party.* He was minister for economic affairs during 2023-2025.

The silence of the Finnish government about Israel’s illegal action to stop the Global Sumud flotilla from reaching war-ravaged Gaza, where Palestinians are suffering from hunger, genocide and ethnic cleansing.
While governments from different countries were condemning Isreal’s action to stop the flotilla, Prime Minister Petter Orpo and his government went silent even if there were at least five Finns who took part and were detained by Israel.

The true “value” of Europe
There is a moral death that precedes the collapse of civilization and one day in the near future, when the truth will be told about the morals and values of Europe, it will be very short: none! with a footnote *for they were selective, reserved for the “chosen ones.”
A freedom of looking away, of choosing to dismiss and deny, a mainstream one way of disciple media championing an iron clad tightly “monitored freedom,” the freedom to accept what you’re told.
Continue reading “Exposing the dark side of us”Migrant Tales will begin to publish a regular weekly posting on the most racist/ xenophobic comments of the week. Why? Because the Perussuomalaiset (PS)* are bleeding in the polls and have therefore ratchet up their attacks against minorities like Muslims.
A new list will be published on Sundays.

Member of the European Parliament Sebastian Tynkkynen Tweets: “A question in the middle of summer: Is there anything good about Islam anywhere?
Perussuomalaiset MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen, 16 August 2025
MT comment: The charlatan hypocrisy of MEP Tynkkynen is striking! Here is a politician who has been convicted three times for ethnic agitation.

Tweets Tynkkynen: “Although this issue was not included in the government program and the RKP still believes that young girls can be veiled, Finland began investigating the ban on veils following a decision by Interior Minister Mari Rantanen.
Now pressure is being exerted on the RKP to introduce a ban on veils in Finland.
This is a matter of girls’ and women’s rights.”
Perussuomslaiset MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen, August 2025
MT comment: Read the above comment about Tynkkynen, who in our book is an opportunist poitician who would care less about the wellbeing of Muslim girls.

Kaisa Garedew is at it again with these two posts on Facebook: “Muslims to Muslim countries,” and “ALL oppresive Islamist headscarves in schools should be banned, including hijabs [veils].“
PS MP Kaisa Garedew, August 2025
MT Comment: It is pathetic that we have politicians like Garedew who believe that their mandate in parliament gives them the divine right to attack Muslims and sexual minorities.

PUBLISHED 12 AUGUST 2025

“Society must first and foremost take care of its own. That is why zero asylum seekers is a good goal. And that is also why, due to unhealthy incentives [to asylumm seekers], it is necessary to reduce state subsidies to a minimum, reduce the refugee-quota scheme to zero, and abolish municipal and regional area compensation for integration.“
Mari Rantanen, Perussuomalaiset (PS)* minister of the interior, 12 August 2025
MT comment: Mari Rantanen is spearheading the PS’ plan to halt asylum seekers to zero even if it means ditching our respect for human rights. Rantanen’s and the PS’ thinking is the following: never trust migrants and pass laws that message your great suspicion of them.

“Why do we have to force these cultures, which are frankly fucked, upon Finland? How is it possible that we have political parties that support the beating of women? Women are not beaten in Western countries! Think about it! Women are beaten on the streets of “liberal” Europe and Finland. I don’t want this kind of Finland.“
Laura Huhtasaari is an MP for PS, August 2025
MT comment: Huhtasaari was a rising star fuelled by her hatred of Muslims. As if rising from the grave after a long lapse of silence, Huhtasaari falsely claims that “women are not beaten in Western countries.” She forgets to mention that Finland is the second most violent place in Europe for women.

“The ban on headscarves is only the first step in saving Finland from Islamization.
Islam does not belong in Finland.“
Kaisa Garedew, PS MP, 11 August 2025
MT comment: Kaisa Garedew is one of the most hateful politicians in Finland. Her comments about Islam show that she has unresolved issues.

“I am truly concerned. There are many Islamic groups in Finland, some of which are covert. They operate under the guise of the Palestinian issue and are growing rapidly in Finland. I have informed the security police about them. For my own safety, I cannot name or reveal them here. For example, there is a large network in Oulu…
…I can provide further information about the organizations and their connections.“
Katariina Reponen, Hyvinkää city councilor, Perussuommalaiset, August 2025
MT comment: Reponen is another PS politicians who sees Muslims under her bed and even claims to work with the security police to uncover Islamic groups, which she claims are a danger to society. Paranoia?

Signed August 1st, 1975, by 35 nations including the United States, Canada, and nearly all European countries, The Helsinki Final Act was a landmark agreement aimed at reducing Cold War tensions and promoting cooperation across political, economic, and human rights domains. It enshrined principles such as sovereign equality, territorial integrity, the peaceful settlement of disputes and respect for human rights—ideals that remain aspirational in today’s fractured geopolitical landscape.
As the meeting to honour the 50th anniversary of The Helsinki Final Act opened on July 31st at Helsinki’s Finlandia Hall we were invited by the Finnish Chairpersonship to consider a program without reference to the looming threat of another nuclear arms race as limiting treaties expire and scant reference to a mounting environmental crises. Many countries that had signed in 1975 were now providing support to Ukraine fighting a Russian invasion and at the same time supporting Israel’s genocide of Gazans.

Finlandia Hall. Sourrce: Google
Meanwhile aggressive threats such as by President Trump to annex Canada and Greenland were mainly ignored on the agenda. Humanity’s existential climate and environmental crises received barely passing reference as billions are transferred to a massive environment-destroying military build-up. In fact these burning issues of the day might not have been mentioned at all were it not for the minority of carefully screened civil society attendees allowed in to join the nearly 1000 official delegates.
🧬 Humanity’s Expanding Biological Footprint
Since 1975, the global population has more than doubled, and with it, humanity’s biological footprint has surged. Industrial agriculture, deforestation, and fossil fuel consumption have accelerated biodiversity loss and climate change. The ecological overshoot—where human demand exceeds Earth’s regenerative capacity—has become a defining feature of the Anthropocene.
💰 World GDP: Then, Now, and Ahead
This economic expansion has lifted billions out of poverty but also intensified resource extraction, emissions, and environmental deterioration.
🛡️ NATO’s Expansion and Contradictions
Since the Cold War’s end, NATO has expanded eastward, incorporating former Warsaw Pact members and Soviet republics such as Poland, Hungary, the Baltic states, and most recently Finland and Sweden. While framed as a stabilizing force, this expansion has been viewed by Russia as a strategic threat, contributing to tensions that culminated in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
NATO countries have largely condemned Russia’s aggression and provided extensive military aid to Ukraine. Yet, many of these same nations have continued arms sales and diplomatic support for Israel during its military campaign in Gaza, which human rights organizations and international observers have described as genocidal in scale. This duality has sparked criticism over selective application of international law and human rights norms.
💣 Military Spending and Emissions
NATO’s collective military spending has surged dramatically in the past decade, driven by renewed great-power competition and regional conflicts. The alliance’s defense budgets now exceed $1.3 trillion annually, with the U.S. alone accounting for nearly half.
This militarization carries an environmental cost: NATO’s greenhouse gas emissions exceed those of over 50% of the world’s nations, according to independent climate assessments. Military operations, supply chains, and infrastructure contribute significantly to global emissions, yet remain largely exempt from international climate treaties.
🧨 Nuclear Treaties and Strategic Instability
Key arms control agreements such as the INF Treaty and New START have either expired or been suspended, eroding decades of nuclear stability. The absence of binding treaties raises the spectre of a renewed arms race, with hypersonic weapons and AI-driven targeting systems adding complexity and risk.

Nämä sotarikokset eivät olisi mahdollisia ilman EU-maiden, kuten Suomen, salaliittoa ja hiljaisuutta.
Palestiina on tunnustettava valtioksi, ja kaikki kaupalliset ja sotilaalliset suhteet Israeliin on lopetettava, jotta palestiinalaisten äärimmäinen kärsimys voidaan lopettaa.

Naji al-Ali and Handala, is a national symbol and personification of the Palestinian people.

We, the Migrant Tales editorial board, want to express our abhorrence and deep disappointment at the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Gaza and other areas of Palestine by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. These war crimes would not be possibe without the collusion and silence of EU countries like Finland.
Palestine must be recognized as a state and all commercial and military relations with Israel must stop to help end the extreme suffering of the Palestinians.

Come an watch today at 7 pm a wonderful play reflecting these troubled times at Botta, Museokatu 10, Helsinki.
Below is a review that Migrant Tales wrote about Helsinki Noir at the end of December.
“Writer and director Ahti Tolvanen, who is a member of the Migrant Tales board, has written a play that reflects hard and uncertain times for Finland. When Ahti came to Finland in the 1970s, it was a very different country. For one, its foreign policy, which some criticized as Finlandization, attempted to coexist with its giant eastern neighbor.
But matters have chaned from those cold war years. Some Finnish politicians regularly beat their chests at Russia and believe that NATO will save the day if Finland is ever invaded by Russia.
“Before, Finland’s foreign policy was dictated by the Soviet Union and now we are prostrate towards the United States,” said Tolvanen. “Finland seems to be adrift and nobody can see where it is heading.”
The play offers a different narrative and take on things. Geopolitics, politics, immigration policy and other factors come to light and offer the viewer a chance to reflect where the country is heading.”
Helsinki Noir, which has showed in Helsinki and London, has received some rave reviews:
“Satirizing ultra-conservative politicians…raising public awareness, and empowering the disempowered” – Yuko Kurahashi, a vising reviewer and professor of drama, Kent State University.
“A wonderful show” said Laura Killeen, director of Rosemary Branch, London

See the full play here.
The cast was made up by Ahti Tolvanen, Eric Riekko, Elia Ronin, Marita ämsä, Maia Kosonen and Peter Joy.

THE STORY WAS UPDATED
A record number of suspected hate crimes* were reported in 2023, rising by 28.99% to 1,606 cases compared with 1,245 cases the previous year, according to the Police University College. The author of the report, Jenita Ranta, blamed “societal factors” like the Russian aggression in Ukraine, and the poor economic situation of people that fuel hate crime.
Ranta talks about these above factors but is silent about an obvious factor: racism in Finland.
Moreover, if last year was a record, we expect 2024 to be another record year when it comes to hate crimes.
The hate crimes reported to the police are only the tip of the iceberg.
As in previous years, hate crimes due to ethnic or national background stood at 68% of all hate crimes, rising last year by 17.42% to 1,092 cases versus 930 cases. That was followed by hate crimes on the grounds of religion or belief (10.3% of all hate crimes), which jumped by 36.36% to 165 cases.
By national group, the Somalis were one of the most affected by hate crimes as were Muslims.
The majority of hate crimes were physical assaults and verbal insults.

Source: Police University College
“Under this group, the biggest group of victims were Muslims. In the statistics on last year’s hate crime reports, it is noteworthy that for the first time ever, there were more suspected hate crimes against Jews or Jewishness than there were suspected hate crimes against Christians. However, Islamic people were most commonly targeted,” according to the Police University College.
Hate crimes committed against sexual minorities (10.6% of all hate crimes) rose by 53.57% to 215 cases, while disability (8%) saw the biggest rise, soaring 137.04% to 128 cases.
*”In general terms, hate crime is a crime motivated by prejudice or hostility towards the victim’s ethnic or national origin. The crime may also be targeted at members of the majority population.” Police University College
Migrant Tales insight: Throughout the years, Migrant Tales has received a lot of recognition. The latest one is from Karolina Budzisz, who wrote her thesis on anti-racism voices in Finland. During the past seventeen years, we have kept true to our goal: It aims to be a voice for those whose views and situation are understood poorly and heard faintly by the media, politicians, and the public. Migrant Tales has published 5,293 posts from over three hundred contributors to date. We stopped taking comments a few years ago, but there are 32,172 of them. We are proudly one of the anti-racism voices in Finland fighting against social ills like the Perussuomalaiset, racism, and discrimination.
Recognition of our work is the greatest reward we can get.
Abstract
Immigration remains among the most salient topics in the socio-political debate in a dynamically transforming Europe, which is reflected in the scholarly interest in the theme. However, as this thesis argues, the attention paid to anti-immigration and pro-immigration poles of the debate is not equal and the agency of immigrants in providing knowledge on the issue pertaining to them directly is relatively neglected in academia.

Read the full thesis here.
“Tales of Our Own” strives to explore the characteristics of pro-immigration and immigrant-made discourses and investigate their relationships with the dominant hostile narratives around immigration emerging in the context of the current populist upsurge. The thesis conceptualizes populism as an antagonizing mode of articulation that provides a stylistic framework for arguments inciting the process of othering. Immigrants in these circumstances constitute perfect ‘Others’, excluded through many novel narratives guising straightforward xenophobia under the mask of neoliberal values. Exploring an underdeveloped discursive frontier with regard for its authorship contributes to the study of the immigrant response and substantial argumentation in the debate. Moreover, it follows the objective of reclaiming immigration as it recuperates the voices of the very actors of it – those ‘on the move’.
