Austria’s far-right scandal and Laura Huhtasaari selfies with Matteo Salvini

What a Saturday! Austria’s far-right FPÖ vice chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache resigns after a video published by two German newspapers offered damaging evidence of him allegedly offering government contracts in return for political support from Moscow, reports The Guardian. 

According to the Austrian news agency APA, new elections would be announced today by Austrian chancellor, Sebastian Kurz.

The video with Strache, filmed in Ibiza in 2017, was an investigative reporting project carried out by German dailies der Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Perussuomalaiset (PS)* vice-chairperson, Laura Huhtasaai, attended the meeting organized by Salvini in Milano and took a selfie with him offering a poker face in light of the FPÖ scandal and the Lega Nord leader’s close ties with Moscow.

At an election panel on Thursday, Huhtasaari, who appeared visibly encouraged by the PS’ good result in the parliamentary elections of April, gave her interpretation of the Universal Human Rights Declaration.

“All people have the same human value, but human rights are a matter of each state,” she said and which after all hell broke loose with the other panelists after her comment.

Vote in the European elections but not for the “let them drown” candidates

ELECTION DAY: 26.5.

36.3%* of Finnish MEP candidates who answered Alma Media’s election compass stated that they either “strongly disagree,” “disagree” or are “neutral” (have no opinion) concerning the following claim: “Is it the obligation of the EU to save all those migrants who attempt to come to Europe and who are at risk of drowning in the Mediterranean?”

In my opinion, such an answer is shameful and washing one’s hands of the problem. Statement #13 of the election compass reveals to us without a doubt what politicians think about human dignity.

I am a migrant and I am proud of who I am

With all the demonizing of migrants by xenophobic and Islamophobic parties, one is required to yell louder and more determinedly: I am proud of my roots, I am proud of my migrant background.

Why is there so much hatred of migrants in today’s Europe?

It’s because Europe is in big denial. Finland is in big denial. How can you hate migrants if millions migrated from these shores to the Americas? How can Finland have xenophobic governments and politicians if over 1.2 million people emigrated from this country between 1860 and 1999?

Incomprehensible, no?

James Baldwin gave us an answer to our question. Substitute the word “Negro” in the quote with “visible migrants,” “Muslims” or “visible minorities”: “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.”

Being a migrant is in some cases not a one-generation affair but goes on for generations.

My great grandfather left Italy because he was an anarchist and migrated to Brazil. From Brazil, he moved with my grandfather and great grandmother to Argentina. My father migrated back to Europe and then to the United States and finally Finland. I migrated to Finland and have lived in several countries (Argentina, Colombia, Italy, and Spain).

The journey that my great grandfather Dante began over a hundred years ago is still in progress.

A warning to all those politicians who are are profiting on the backs of migrants: Don’t underestimate us. We know who you are and history will expose you shamefully to your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

* The Perussuomalaiset (PS) party imploded on June 13, 2017, into two factions, the PS and New Alternative, which is now called Blue Reform. In the last parliamentary election, Blue Reform has wiped off the Finnish political map when they saw their numbers in parliament plummet from 18 MPs to none. A direct translation of Perussuomalaiset in English would be something like “basic” or “fundamental Finn.” Official translations of the Finnish name of the party, such as Finns Party or True Finns, promote in our opinion nativist nationalism and racism. We, therefore, at Migrant Tales prefer to use in our postings the Finnish name of the party once and after that the acronym PS.

A Perussuomalaiset lawmaker who shows no regrets in breaking the law

Perussuomalaiset (PS)* newly elected MP Ano Turtiainen [1] was quoted as saying in Mikkeli-based Länsi-Savo that he has no regrets about publishing in December 2015 a post where he asks people to burn asylum reception centers run by the Red Cross.

Moreover, Turtianen dropped his plea to the Court of Appeal that would have overturned the 2015 conviction that asked people to commit a criminal act. He said he dropped the appeal because he would have had a slim chance of prevailing.

Turtiainen wrote and got convicted for encouraging arson attacks against asylum reception centers. He said that “elimination task [groups]” are essential because they defended Finland’s “independence and security.”

Lähes 40% suomalaisista eurovaaliehdokkaista on sitä mieltä, että maahanmuuttajien pelastaminen Välimerellä on toisarvoinen kysymys

36,3%* suomalaisista eurovaaliehdokkaista (85/234) vastasi ”täysin erimieltä,” ”erimieltä” tai ”neutraali” Alma Median vaalikoneen väitteeseen: “EU:n velvollisuus on pelastaa kaikki hukkumisriskillä Välimeren ylittävät Eurooppaan pyrkivät siirtolaiset.”

Mielestäni väite on selkeä eikä jätä ketään epäilemään mitä poliitikot ajatteleva ihmisarvosta.

Onko EU:n velvollisuus pelastaa kaikki hukkumisriskissä olevat maahanmuuttajat? Ehdottomasti kyllä.

Yksi asia, mikä on tullut selville tästä ”anna hukkua” listasta on hiljaisuus. Yhden perussuomalaisen EU -vaaliehdokkaan vastaus listalle joutumiseen oli: “Kaikenlaista.”

Vaalikonet tarvitsevat lisää hyviä kysymyksiä, joista selviää politiikojen ajatukset ihmisarvosta ja ihmisoikeuksista.

Ehdotan Alma Medialle yhtä vaalikonekysymystä:

”Mitä mieltä olette ihmisoikeuksista?”

Vastaus: (1) Ihmisoikeudet ovat vanhanaikaisia ja ne pitää poistaa tai unohtaa;

(2) Ihmisoikeudet on pidettävä ennallaan;

(3) Ihmisoikeuksia pitää vahvistaa.

On surullista nähdä kuinka syvään Suomi on moraalisesti vajonnut.

The Alma Median EU election compass shows that (85/234) MEP candidates of the Perussuomalaiset* and National Coalition Party as the most eager to allow migrants drown in the Mediterranean. Even a neutral, or no opinion answer, is problematic. Does it mean that you are quiet and look the other way when people drown?

Who are these MEP candidates, who don’t care if a person drowns in the Mediterranean?

Here is a story about a person who almost died when crossing the Mediterranean.

Children also drown in the Mediterranean. On the left is Alan Kurdi and on the right a little girl. During 2014-2019 there were a total of 18,328 people (2019 410, 2018 2,299, 2017 3,139, 2016 5,143, 2015 5,054, 2014 3,283) died who attempted to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. Here is the link.

Alma Median EU vaalikone on paljastunut, että perussuomalaisten ja kokoomuslaisten ehdokkaat ovat kaikista innokkaimpia hukuttamaan maahanmuuttajia Välimereen. Tähän vaalikonen kysymykseen neutraali vastaus on vähintään ongelmallinen. Tarkoittavatko, että olevat hiljaa ja katsovat sormien läpi kun ihmiset hukkuvat?

The Social Democrats should not form government with far-right parties like the PS

Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said in Yle said that just because a far-right party like the Sweden Democrats get 17.5% of the votes in an election, it does not mean an automatic ticket to government. 

“I cannot accept a party [Sweden Democrats] that does not recognize human rights as inseparable,” he was quoted as saying in Yle, “and which sees the Saami and Jews as not Swedes. It’s impossible. Everyone has equal human dignity [and] we cannot give in an inch to that principle.”

I hope Finland’s new prime minister, Antti Rinne, was listening to Löfven’s interview.

The fact that an Islamophobic party like the Perussuomalaiset (PS)* came in second in Finland’s April 14 elections should not entitle them to form part of the government.

Why should we accept racism, misogyny, and parties that have disdain for human rights? We should show such parties like the PS the door or the cold dark place of the opposition.

The sooner we start to see the PS as an extremist far-right party, the better for our democracy.

Presidentti Sauli Niinistön sitaatit maahanmuutosta ja moninaisuudesta paljastavat jotain ikävää hänestä

Joka kerta kun Presidentti Sauli Niinistö kommentoi turvapaikanhakijoita, maahanmuutosta, kaksoiskansalaisuudesta, rasismista tai perussuomalaisista, hän useasti päästä samakoita  suusta. 

Jos olemme reiluja, Presidentti Niinistö on taitava ulkopolitiikassa ja osaa edusta Suomea.

Tasavallan Presidentti vaati, että ihmisten pitää noudattaa Suomen lakeja ja arvoja. Olemme samaa mieltä. Mutta…

Entä tasavertaisuus? Saako ihminen vain harjoittaa oma kulttuuria neljä seinän sisällä?  Perustuslain 17§ sanoo: “Saamelaisilla alkuperäiskansana sekä romaneilla ja muilla ryhmillä on oikeus ylläpitää ja kehittää omaa kieltään ja kulttuuriaan.”

Tässä ei lukee missän, että kultturia on pakko harrastaa piilossa.

The Finnish media should refer to the Perussuomalaiset as a far-right party

Helsingin Sanomat goes to some length in a story about the Perussuomalaiset (PS)* being referred to by the chairperson of the Social Democratic Party (PSOE), Pedro Sánchez,  as a “far-right”[1]  party. We could not agree more with Sánchez’ description of the PS as a far-right party. 

Sánchez was quoted as saying in El País: “Look what happened in Finland [on April 14], where an opinion poll predicted as a given fact that the Social Democrats would win by a wide margin and the far right [PS] would come in fifth. They won by 6,000 votes the far right!”

Spain’s Social Democratic leader Pedro Sánchez called the PS a far-right party. Read the full story (in Spanish) here.

Is only Sánchez and El País the only ones who call the PS a far-right party?

It is not the first time. Others that have referred the PS as a far-right party are: the Financial Times of London, The Guardian, Politico, Spiegel Online, EUObserver,The Local SE, and others.

If the PS is seen as a far-right party by the media in Europe, why isn’t it called that in Finland by Helsingin Sanomat and others?

For one, the national media rarely uses in Finland such a term of a party that has members in parliament. Considering that over a half a million Finns vote for the PS, newspapers like Helsingin Sanomat are dependent on subscribers and ads.
