PS report claims that Finnish “red-green” journalists believe that the party is racist and therefore live in a bubble

Perussuomalaiset (PS)* thinktank Suomen Perusta believes that journalists in Finland live in a red-green bubble, reports Helsingin Sanomat. According to Marko Hamilo, who did the report, claims that support for the Greens and the left is “over-represented” among journalists when compared with the rest of the population.

“Studies made in other parts of the world show that journalists are more represented by the values of liberal and left-wing parties than the rest of the population on average,” he said. “Opinion polls made in Finland show the same tendency. Among journalists the Greens enjoy strong support when again the Perussuomalaiset is the least popular party among the media.”

Hamilo adds: “They [journalists] really believe that the Perussuomalaiset are racist. They really live in that kind of a bubble.”

Are the PS racist? This is an oversimplified claim by Hamilo but they are the only party in Finland that says pretty racist and bigoted things about migrants and minorities. They are near-constantly stressing “us” versus “them” and thereby polarizing society. If the PS didn’t say and act in such a racist manner there wouldn’t be any need for Migrant Tales.

The makers of the Herätys Suomi! Racism is Real! video are a shining example of how migrants and minorities should raise their voices against a social ill like racism.

I am confident that we’re in good hands with people like these that produced and acted in the video below. We’ll succeed at challenging racism effectively in this country.

Don’t forget that racism is based on lies and everyone knows that lies don’t have legs.

What’s wrong with this story? The headline offers us an answer to the latter question why their new boss, Perussuomalaiset (PS)* Foreign Minister Timo Soini, is commonly misunderstood by the German media. What has the German media “misunderstood” about Soini? The Finnish embassy spokeswoman stated that the PS is commonly seen in a negative light by the German media and labelled as a far right party. In all of the seven German dalies quoted in the Ilta-Sanomat story, none of them claim that Soini’s party is “far right” but “right-wing populist” and “EU-skeptic.” If Ilta-Sanomat were interested in quality journalism it would ask why there is such a perception of the PS in the German media in the first place and are they wrong in claiming that it is a right-wing populist, anti-immigration and anti-EU party? A lot of stories and names could serve as sources to reinforce the latter: Jussi Halla-aho, Olli Immonen, Juho Eerola, Teuvo Hakkarainen, Olli Sademies, Teemu Lahtinen, Jussi Niinistö, Harri Tauriainen, Tommi Rautio, Tony Halme, Hanna Mäntylä, James Hirvisaari, who was sacked from the party, and many, many others.

Perussuomalaiset Maria Lohela: Inte min talman, or not my speaker of parliament

Perussuomalaiset (PS)* Maria Lohela got elected Friday as speaker of parliament. Lohela is no ordinary MP but one who doesn’t believe in religious freedom, migrant and homosexual rights. As a politician she is the antithesis of Nordic values unless you believe that those values are supposed to advance bigotry and racism.

The picture below was found on the internet and means in English: Not my speaker of parliament.

The famous saying, Inte min talman, or you’re not my speaker of parliament, comes from Swedish MP Rossana Dinamarca of the Left Party. In the video below, Dinamarca goes to the podium and addresses the Swedish Riksdag (parliament). When Sweden Democrat deputy speaker of parliament Björn Söder tells her to address him as “honorable speaker” she refuses and states, Inte min talman.

Emanuela Daniel tells about the historic protest they organized in front of parliament against the new speaker of parliament

Emanuela Daniel is an exemplary woman for organizing Friday a historic protest outside of parliament against Perussuomalaiset (PS)* Maria Lohela, who was elected as the new speaker of parliament. Daniel told Migrant Tales about that day and when she spoke to PS MP Teuvo Hakkarainen, who has also made many racist and Islmophobic statements against Finland’s ever-growing culturally diverse community.

Social Democrat MP Timo Harakka tweeted below that the protest was “a modest” show of force but “historic” nevertheless.

Daniel said that she had to organize the protest against Lohela because it was important.

When big mainstream parties play along with populist and anti-immigration parties like the Perussuomalaiset (PS)*, which base their campaign on one part hot air and two parts xenophobia and nationalism, you get the government we have today and a speaker of parliament called Maria Lohela.

Christian Thibault has been a tireless activist for migrant and human rights in Finland. Here he is below with a group of activists holding up signs to MPs going to vote for the new speaker of parliament.

Good for you! I take my hat off for you Christian and those other brave activists that were with you holding signs that read: Don’t vote for Lohela and Stand up against racism.

In one picture below there is Green Party MP Jani Toivola standing together with the activists.

And that is what Lohela’s questionable track record is: She has said some pretty racist and horrible things about migrants and Muslims. Her whole political message is based on xenophobia.

Those terrible things she has said are the skeletons in her closet that will creep behind her for the rest of her political career, which I and many hope will be short.

UPDATED Helsingin Sanomat: PS Helsinki substitute councilman wants forced sterilization of new African refugees in Finland

Helsinki substitute councilman Olli Sademies of the anti-immigration Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party stated on Facebook that Finland should carry out forced sterilization of new African refugees that move to the country, reports Helsingin Sanomat. Such a racist statement by a member of the PS is nothing new. A PS politician wrote in 2013 that groups like African refugees, which are prone to commit rape according to him, should be chemically castrated.

Writes Sademies: “When Africans arrive as ‘refugees’ to Finland, they continue to reproduce at the same rate [as in their home countries] even if they would do with less children. In order to force [high birth rates] to plummet we should limit the amount of children immigrants can have. Three [children] would be the maximum.”

While such statements are outrageous and reinforce that the PS is a hostile party to immigrants, minorities and to our ever-growing culturally diverse society, it’s the reaction of the party secretary, Riikka Slunga-Poutsalo, which is even more incredible.

Facebook: Does “Finnish labor” include migrants, naturalized Finns and minorities?

One of the members of the new government, the right-wing populist Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party, said that jobs will be created for Finnish labor. In the present anti-immigration environment in Finland, such statements have a hostile ring to migrants, naturalized Finns and minorities since they don’t promote inclusion and fair hiring practices.

Considering that migrant unemployment is three-times higher than the national average, do you think that such statements, which stress “us” and “then,” improve the chances of such people getting hired?

Why can’t politicians like PS chairman Timo Soini, who likes to make nationalistic statements, drop the adjective “Finnish” and state that the efforts by the new government and policy will create new jobs?

Certainly that phrase sounds more inclusive than “Finnish labor.”

It’s pretty clear what Soini means by Finnish labor, or suomalainen työ, which is code for “don’t hire migrants and minorities. It’s your patriotic duty as an employer to hire white Finns.”

It would be great if at least one journalist could ask Soini if he considers migrants, naturalized Finns and minorities to be “Finnish labor.”

New book on Somali community of Finland highlights what we’ve known for long: social hostility and blatant discrimination

A new book called Suomen somalit by Yusuf M. Mubarak, Eva Nilsson and Niklas Saxén reinforces what has been already known about some of the challenges that Finland’s Somali community faces: racism and social exclusion.

“I have never felt that I am a Finn,” said Suleqo Yusuf, 23, a Somali Finn, was quoted as saying in the book. “Here you’re always an outsider and different, never a part of society.”

The feeling of being an eternal outsider in Finland is felt by many migrants and minorities as well.

Migrant Tales recently spoke to a Somali Finn who said that she does not identify with a country like Finland because of its hostility towards her.

“I am a citizen of the world,” she said. “Not a Finn. I don’t identify with this country [even if I was born and bred here].”

You don’t have to have a PhD in sociology to understand where some of the problems lie. If the Somali community has been in Finland since the early 1990s. Check the discrimination and hostility that the Romany minority, which has lived in Finland for about 500 years, has suffered at the hands of the white Finnish majority.

While matters are improving, the Roma in Finland continue to face discrimination and racism daily.

Mubarak, one of the three authors of the book, states that its clear that a lot of problems will arise if children are told that they are equal to white Finns but rapidly find out that this isn’t the case.

So what is the value of such a book and what does it reveal?
