The media must fact-check what xenophobic politicians spread and claim

It is a good sign that some Finnish media like Yle are fact-checking what politicians say. However, it is a bit too late because the Perussuomalaiset (PS)* have built their popularity on making false claims about migrants.

I’m pretty certain that if we were to do a fact-check on all the claims about migrants since 2010, most of them would be false, grossly exaggerated, and outright lies.

In just a matter of a week, PS chairperson Jussi Halla-aho, who was convicted in 2012 for ethnic agitation and breaching the sanctity of religion, got called out for making false statements about migrants.

One of these false statements made by Halla-aho recently was that low-wage workers come to Finland, work for a few months, and then quit their jobs and live off social welfare. This is totally false.

Halla-aho made another false statement when he stated that one-third of income, housing benefit recipients are immigrants.

It’s one of the oldest tricks in the books used against journalists by xenophobic politicians is the following: A politician makes an outrageous claim to a journalist, who doesn’t even bother to question its veracity. Eventually, the journalist may do some investigating and find out that he or she was fed malarkey. By then it’s too late because the story is already out there.

For the PS, migrants and foreigners are a non-stop obsession. Some, like Halla-aho, have built their political career on victimizing, bashing, and spreading racist lies and exaggerations about migrants.

Falling into Finland’s ever-deepening pit of conflict and hypocrisy

The Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party is the biggest threat to our Nordic welfare state and democracy. Their xenophobic ideology reveals a noticeable conflict.

Gunnar Myrdal (1898.1987), a Swedish economist who did a groundbreaking study in the early 1940s about its racism, brought this dilemma to light:

“How can they [USAmericans] claim to respect the dignity of all persons, equality, and the inalienable rights to freedom, justice, and a fair opportunity, while countenancing pervasive violations of the dignity of blacks and their rights to that freedom, that justice, and that fair opportunity?”

In the same light, we can ask to whom and how social equality, one of our Nordic welfare state pillars, applies to migrants and minorities? Do these noble values apply to Muslims, people of color, and other visible migrants and minorities? Are we also living in a conflict where we preach one thing but do the opposite?

Take, for instance, one of PS’s first vice-president Riikka Purra’s reaction Fardowsa Mahamoud’s decision not to do military service because the hijab, or veil, is still prohibited.

Kokoomus and the PS are ready to go to bed after the municipal election

The Perussuomalaiset (PS)* is a far-right and racist party that will fail in the end because its core values are based on malarkey. Parties like the National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) that want to form bedroom alliances with the PS will fail as well.

The chairperson of the National Coalition Party (Kokoomus), Petter Orpo, is well-known as a politician who vacillates on different issues. When it comes to migrants, he tends to blow with the wind.

Orpo has said in autumn that he would not mind forming a government with the PS where its leader, Jussi Halla-aho, would be prime minister. He confirmed his party’s willingness to form a government with the PS in Friday’s Maaseudun Tulevaisuus, a newspaper with ties to the Center Party.

One reader commented on Maaseudun Tulevaisuus about such a government: “I haven’t seen yet such an eerie nightmare where Kokoomus and the Perussuomalaiset are ruling the country.”

“If the ruling parties suffer a big defeat [in the municipal election], the least they must do is change the direction of their policies,” Orpo was quoted as saying. “If a party in the government suffers heavily, it may make you wonder if you want to be a member of the government.”

The Perussuomalaiset now call migrants “cheap labor”

The Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party’s hatred for migrants goes through the same path but the accusations and labeling vary. About ten years ago migrants were rapists, after 2015 when a record number of asylum seekers came to Finland, they were “social welfare surfers.” Today, the PS calls migrants “dumb” who want to work for lower wages.

**Finland’s integration program is full of contradictions.**

As in the previous years, the PS makes up labels constantly. It never has anything positive to say about migrants except to repeat its favorite word: maahanmuuttajat (immigrant), maahanmuuttajat, maahanmuuttajat…

Here is the question: Why would anyone want to get paid lower wages for work? If people are getting paid less, aren’t they possibly being exploited?

Certainly, migrants that move to Finland and enter the labor market must follow the law. Unions have a special role in protecting the rights of these migrants at the workplace.

The problem, however, is that exploitation and crime in Finland pays. Since few are looking after the rights of migrants, never mind the PS, it is a bit similar to throwing these people to their own luck.

In plain English, Finland does too little address the exploitation of migrants in the labor market.

Maybe migrants would learn a thing or two if integration courses would tell them how they are vulnerable to exploitation instead of giving exceptionalist explanations about how Finland is a country of gender equality.

Labeling migrants disrespectfully as “cheap labor” by the PS is placing all the blame on such people and letting underhanded employers off the hook.

Is there a difference between former and present Perussuomalaiset members?

Some of the persons promoting racism, violence, and Hungarian-Orbán-style rule in Finland are former and present Perussuomalaiset (PS)* members. The only difference between these two types of PS supporters is their incitement of violence and racism.

James Hirvisaari, who was sacked from the party after he took a picture of a friend giving a Nazi salute in parliament, is the aide of MP Ano Turtianen, who got the boot from the PS parliamentary group last year and who got ejected in February from the Islamophobic white-nationalist party.

Hirvisaari tweeted a poll about what punishment should be handed to the state prosecutor if found guilty of persecuting white nationalists and Finland’s Christian society.

His solution:

Death by hanging
Death by injection
Electric chair

In Finland we also have our crazies.

Länsi-Savo: Rakentavampaa keskustelua moninaisesta Mikkelistä

Perussuomalaisten mikkeliläisen kaupunginvaltuutetun Jussi Marttisen väitteet maahanmuuttajista puolueen vaalisivulla herättävät kysymyksiä.

Luottamushenkilöllä pitäisi olla velvollisuus varmistaa, että tiedot, joita hän levittää, ovat oikeita ja luotettavia.

Perussuomalaiset puhuvat maahanmuuttajista valtavana ongelmana, vaikka valtaosa tästä ryhmästä on eurooppalaisia.

Ihmiset, jotka ovat saaneet turvapaikan Suomessa tai humanitäärisen suojelun, ovat pieni ryhmä. Heitä on noin 10 prosenttia kaikista maahanmuuttajista.

Tilastokeskuksen mukaan Etelä-Savossa asui viime vuonna 132 702 ihmistä, josta 4?656 (3,5 prosenttia) vieraskielisiä.

Näistä suurin ryhmä oli venäjänkieliset, joita oli 1?677. Vironkielisiä oli 409, arabiaa puhuvia 285 ja persiankielisiä 250.

Yksi Marttisen väitteistä on, että ulkomaalaiset saavat ”huomattavasti” enemmän sosiaaliturvaa kuin kantaväestö. Mihin faktoihin hänen väitteensä pohjautuvat?

Jos maahanmuuttajien palkat ovat noin 25 prosenttia pienemmät kuin kantaväestöllä keskimäärin, on selvä, että ansiosidonnainen työttömyysturva, eläkkeistä puhumattakaan, on pienempi. Kaikki Suomessa saavat samaa sosiaaliturvaa, tämä on taattu perustuslaissa.

Marttinen moittii myös vihapuhetta koskevaa lakia, joka estää häntä ja muita “puhumaan asiat suoraan” maahanmuutosta, vaikka hän niin tekee omassa vaalikirjoituksessaan.

Mielestämme vihapuhelait ovat tarpeellisia, koska ne puolustavat erilaisia vähemmistöjä. Vihapuhe ja rasismi ruokkivat henkistä, jopa fyysistä väkivaltaa.

Olen samaa mieltä Marttisen kanssa siitä, että on oltava kiitollinen veteraaneille, jotka ovat puolustaneet maatamme.

Olisi hyvä myös muistaa, että on ollut toisia ihmisiä, jotka ovat myös puolustaneet ja tulevat puolustamaan maatamme, jos siihen on tarvetta.

Nykyään, kuten ennenkin, on eritaustaisia suomalaisia eikä sen pitäisi olla uutta tietoa. Yli 1,2 miljoonaa suomalaista lähti maahanmuuttajina Suomesta vuosien 1860–1999 aikana ja monet heistä ovat monitaustaisia suomalaisia.

Jos Marttinen on huolissaan siitä, että hän tuntuu olevan toisen luokan kansalainen Suomessa, kehottaisin häntä tutustumaan ihmisiin, joita hän leimaa ja jotka ovat todellisia yhteiskunnan toisen luokan asukkaita.

Mikkelissä oli 1990-luvulla suuri rasismiongelma. Kiitos kaupungin aktiivisuuden sekä monikulttuurikeskus Mimosan ja monen mikkeliläisten toiminnan, saimme muutettua tilanteen. Toivon, ettemme ikinä palaa siihen aikaan.

Turtianen is a threat to the PS and an example of everything that’s wrong with the far-right Islamophobic party

Former Perussuomalaiset (PS) MP Ano Turtiainen has become a real thorn in the side of the far-right Islamophobic party. Apart from his racist postings of George Floyd, encouraging violence against asylum reception centers, assaulting a fourteen-year-old, wishing that asylum seekers would drown at sea, inciting civil war, anti-vaxxer buffoonery, and other issues.

His latest tweet states that he would be ready to kill people if a friend of his was forced to use a mask.

He tweets: “Everything pisses me off.
My friend said that ‘I would be ready to kill if someone in this
country forces me to use a mask.
I would not stand idly [if my friend would start to kill people].
Regards to my [MP] colleagues if you are for wearing masks.”

Perussuomalaiset MP Sebastian Tynkkynen’s third ethnic agitation charge

People who are suspected and later convicted for ethnic agitation defend themselves in the following manner: my free speech rights are being infringed; it is prohibited to debate immigration topics and that “I am innocent…”

Oulu Perussuomalaiset (PS)* MP Sebastian Tynkkynen has made a name for himself as an avid Islamophobe who mixes hate speech from the earnest debate. For some strange reason but in the same way as a junkie, he cannot lay off the (Islamophobic) stuff.

“If making immigration-critical policies is deemed illegal by the judiciary,” Tynkkynen was quoted as saying in Yle News, “then it can be said that the judiciary is in a very weak position. The opportunities for one party to take practical action are deprived.”

What is wrong with the above statement?

Note that he uses the term “immigration-critical” which is just a sugar-coated word for Islamophobic and xenophobic. Moreover, he is falsely claiming that “one party” is being deprived of acting against Muslims.

One party? That one party, the PS, spreads Islamophobic diatribe constantly.

You are not being censored, Tynkkynen, you are being told that there are ways to debate matters without victimizing, spreading hate and labeling whole groups of people.

Tynkkynen was convicted for hate speech in 2017 and 2016.

If his latest conviction is upheld by a court, he will have the most hate crime convictions of any MP in Finnish history.

Covid-19 is the oxygen that the PS breathes to grow in Finland

How much is the Covid-19 pandemic impacting in a positive manner the far-right Perussuomalaiset (PS)* party? This is not a trivial question considering that the party, which has built its voter base and message on racism, leads in the polls. What future does the PS have when the Covid-19 pandemic subsides? Will it be a painful day of reckoning for it?

Covid-19 has uprooted our lives for over a year. We have faced lockdowns, fear, and our generous share of conspiracy theories like the lie about the great replacement. In such a backdrop, the PS is leading in the polls.

But not to worry. The PS is a tinderbox that will implode due to its own making.

Disagree?

Look at the PS candidates in the municipal elections. All white people, mostly men except for one black person, tell us how they want to take Finland back and do everything possible to continue excluding migrants, especially Muslims and people of color. The white nationalism soundbites are mentally nauseating.

The only reason a party like the PS has grown, and why their politicians can continue to spread racism and hostility against migrants and minorities with near impunity, is because Finland has issues with its racism. I am still confident, however, that we can push back the far-right threat and save our country from turning into a Hungary and Poland.

In the face of such challenges, it is clear that the PS will not make Finland a more socially equal country but exacerbate such social ills.

If you study the history of the PS, it has done everything possible to label and stigmatize migrants and minorities as useless human beings. It even calls some migrant and minority groups as “harmful.”

Isn’t it surprising that after they have tarred and feathered us in public for at least three decades, they wonder why certain groups face high unemployment in Finland?

The PS and its followers are responsible for the hostility, violence, and exclusion that migrants and minorities are presently suffering in Finland.

When the pandemic subsides and when we return to what was normal, that is when the PS will begin to retreat in the polls. People will be able to get out of their four walls and computer screens and interact with the world as they did before.

That is the day that the PS dreads the most.

Is Jussi Halla-aho’s deep voice fake?

Elizabeth Holmes built a 9-billion-dollar company called Theranos from scratch that promised to test blood with a single drop. One of the many deceptions she used to trick investors was her deep voice. As a woman, it gave her more authority.

Those who have watched Perussuomalaiset (PS)* chairperson Jussi Halla-aho for a few years will note that his voice has changed. He usually switches to a deep voice when he is answering questions from reporters and on talk shows.

Considering that Holmes is a woman and Halla-aho’s deficiency is that he lacks charisma, does he fake his voice to make up for his dull image?

Below is Halla-aho speaking in 2013 and the video below that is from last month.

Note the difference.

Just like Holmes, Halla-aho is marketing urban legends about migrants and minorities. He does so hellbent on polarizing and stigmatizing even more migrants and minorities in this country.

Even if about half a million people voted for the PS in the parliamentary elections of 2019, Holmes succeed as well at fooling investors of hundreds of millions of dollars on fake promises and deception.
