A Kurdish activist in Sweden who faces deportation to Iran fears imprisonment and death

Posted on March 7, 2019 by Migrant Tales

THE STORY WAS UPDATED

An activist of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Sweden is under threat of being deported to Iran, where he believes he could be imprisoned and life would be under threat. Following the footsteps of many of his country, Agrin,* came to Sweden in 2015 and lives in Eskilstuna, located 112 kilomters west of Stockholm.

A representative of the the Summit Foundation for Refugee and Displaced Presons Affairs, expressed “extreme concern” about the plight of the etained Kurdish activist facing deportation to Iran. He wrote that thereatment and punishment of those who oppose the Iranian regime is “well-known.”

“When someone is bing deported from one country to another, the authorities of the country apprehend, handcuff and evn restrain the person if necessary,” the representative wrote in an email. “Then he is escorted by three officials with his files, which will be handed as well to that country’s authorities.”

While the complicated political situation of the Kurds is due to the ongoing conflict in Syria and the region, both Turkey and Iran announced Wednesday that their forces will carry out a joint operation against Kurdish rebels.

Agrin used to live in the Rammadi refugee camp in Iraq but after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, he moved with his family to another city in Iraq.

Agrin taking part in a demonstration against Iran in Sweden.

In recent years, a number of EU countries have deported many Iranian political opposition activists resulting in one execution and disappearance of many others. The crackdown of Kurdish activists in Iran has resulted in imprisonment and death, according to Hengaw Organisation for Human Rights.

If you want to help and stop this deportation, please get in touch with [email protected].

* The original name of the person was changed.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Trump, snow jobs, and fake leader of the so-called free world

Posted on June 14, 2018 by Migrant Tales

“President Donald Trump is the end of a process that capitalism and corporate greed have created. A driving force of US foreign policy is a free-for-all to continue pillaging other countries and peoples with war and exploitation. One of the reasons why Trump can bow to Kim Jong-un and not to Iran is because racism is a strong factor in US foreign policy.”

In Europe and in Finland, we have politicians from the National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) and others who would not think twice about selling out to corporate capitalism and the USAmerican model, which is based on chronic and pathological social injustice.

No, this is not a North Korean propaganda film. It’s a propaganda film made by the United States. There is no care for the suffering of the North Koreans never mind the human rights violations in that country. Trump and the US would not care less.

Hussain Kazemian: A former Shia militia member seeks asylum in Finland

Posted on May 2, 2018 by Migrant Tales

Migrant Tales insight: This story below, written by Hussain Kazemian, an Afghan living in Finland, was of a countryman called Sadr, 27, who spoke on condition of anonymity about his failed request for asylum in Finland. He got his first rejection from the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) in spring 2016. Sadr appealed, but the administrative court  overturned it winter 2017. He is now waiting for the supreme administrative court’s decision on his second appeal.

Sadr was one of the hundreds of thousand undocumented Afghan refugees in Iran 1 who also entered and sought refuge in Finland in 2015.

He had no idea how to carry a rifle, but after he was recruited and after some weeks of military training in Iran, he was prepared to fight as a soldier of the Iranian Shia militia on the front line in Syria. In the end, he had fears and escaped the war, but it was not possible for him to go back to Afghanistan because of the National Directorate of Security of Afghanistan (NDS), which detains anyone who took part in the conflict in Syria.

After living many years and working in different cities of Iran earning lower-than-normal wages, Sadr was detained many times and forced to be in deportation camps. Even if they sent him back to Afghanistan, he returned to Iran to work. He joined the Iranian Shia militia only to get a residence permit 2 in Iran.

“It was frustrating for me to do construction work and get paid lower wages than normal,” he said. “Sometimes the employer did not even pay me my wages because he knew I didn’t have the right to complain in that country since I was an undocumented Afghan refugee. Nevertheless, I decided to go to a registration office and have a look and ask questions about becoming a member of the Shia militia.”

The manager of the Keuruu asylum reception center prohibits religious and cultural celebrations – is this the Finnish way of welcoming newcomers?

Posted on October 15, 2016 by Migrant Tales

Migrant Tales continues to hear accounts about the Keuruu asylum reception center, where Afghan asylum seekers claim to be treated in a disrespectful manner by the staff with Iranian origin.* One of the many gripes that some asylum seekers have is against the center’s manager, Rasul Azizan, who is referred to as “a dictator” because he imposes his own rule.

One of those rules is that no religious or cultural celebrations can be held at the center.

Migrant Tales got in touch with the Keuruu asylum reception center Thursday on two occasions but the manager, Azizan, never returned my calls.

Refusing people, especially those fleeing war and oppression, from not being able to practice their religion and culture is not only an example of the lack of cultural sensitivity and poor management but against our own sound judgment and sense of fairness. The Finnish Constitution guarantees religious freedom.

The reception center is located 7 kilometers from a small town of 10,000 inhabitants.

While the reception center manager hasn’t given a reason why he forbids religious and cultural celebrations to take place at the camp, one source claimed it was one way that Azizan discriminates and “teases” Afghans.

Migrant Tales Literary: Mark or question mark

White or yellow or one step until yellow …Finish the race???

The question mark means that it is a question for you, so this story wants your ideas; u can prove them, ur idea as u wish.

This is a colorful question so it isn’t an easy question to answer… but if I contrarily asked a colorless question every one would be answer it easily.

Actually i am trying to understand more about your race because i want to know where you came from, when, how and why did you come to Finland???

And there is nothing wrong to talk about race or ask this question… that’s my opinion.

Did you all came from the same place? Like the Ural Mountains… or from some different place?

Some Finns have tight eyes, flat noses and round faces; some of you aren’t white but yellow…again this is only my observation.

Well for sure you know who you are better than anyone else.

When you are a blond, there’s a faint, faint streak of yellow.

Yes your race… don’t be shocked because it was you who made me focus on race from the first day i set foot on Finland.

However i am proud of who i am… i love myself and my family and when i have a question i answer it easily… i am a Persian from Iran.

i always love everything  and everything that I have belongs to me.

Race is not important  for me but  morals are more important. Talking about race isn’t forbidden by me since i’d like to know more about who  you are.

I am myself a brunette and Persian, but in Iran we have white, blond, dark and darker… different kinds of people live in my country.

My grandfather was a white man with green eyes (they called him blond, but he was not like your blond). My grandmother was like me.

I’d like to test my DNA… it would be exciting for me to know even if I couldn’t change the result. I am who I am.

Finally we are  both guests in this land, aren’t we not?? The Sami were here before you moved here, and when i came here you were both here.

You came earlier and i came later… you came with your family and and i came alone and it was not my will… it was the UN’s  will.

Then why isn’t this land called Samiland instead of Finland???

Really?

I have never seen a Sami person in Finland and i would like to meet them…it is one of my wishes; i’d like see them face to face and close up. i’d like to know about their culture. Well i was living only in Vaasa and then in Helsinki, i know they live in such places but I never met one of them.

NOW

So how do you feel about my question?

Do you like it if a stranger asked you such a question?

Or do you think that it your the only one who has the right to ask such a question?

Does race play a big role in your life? Well this is a big question for your politicians and government… i don’t know if they’d  even let you ask such a question.

This question  gives the Finnish government such an allergic reaction that its body temperature can rise to 45C°.

My chin is up.

Oh life’s mysteries, oh green hope don’t leave me, oh eternal faith stay with me, hey my sweet voice flight-flight, take me with u to distant places that they call Iran, to the soil where my roots grew and remain, to the house of my mother, to the room where my father is waiting for her (daughter) Dana, in the presence of my brother and their eyes waiting for me.

My eyes r cloudy, pulverous, my heart heard a bird’s song, a twitter that called and alerted me.
Today a tall green tree said hi to me, and the greeting of its younger leaves were sweet like honey and made me feel at peace.
Kallio’s roses held me today and their scent transported me back home.
Today, the tiny red radish at  Lidl  told me to buy them.
Today the wind wanted to carry my scent with itself to my land and home, to the woman that carried me inside for 9 month and gave birth to me, and caress her face with my scent, maybe she can hide my perfume in a small glass and rub it on her face every day, maybe my scent will stay with her for eternity, yes, forever.
I wish i could fly wherever i wished, without a body that doesn’t need a passport, visa and immigration service, that giant evil.
Ah Finland hit me with a cancel-permission stamp, i wish Finland to love me, i wish Finland would see me,  i wish someone would call out for me and say that I exist, whether no-one knows my name.

An immigrant’s life in Finland:* Dana misses her family

Posted on April 21, 2012 by Dana

By Enrique Tessieri

I have never met in person an Iranian woman calls herself anonymously Dana. Even so, she comes to life little by little as an image in my mind  and when she writes about her greatest suffering in Finland: living without her parents. Things may get worse before they improve for Dana since Christian Democrat minister of the interior, Päivi Räsänen, announced plans last year to tighten further family reunification rules.

It’s quite incredible that a country that suffered a devastating war and had to resettle 410,000 Karelian refugees after the Continuation War (1941-44) lacks compassion for refugees who are traumatized by war and need their parents as well as their closest relatives by their sides. Finns who emigrated to the United States in the nineteenth century did the same thing. After they got settled, they brought their relatives and even their friends and neighbors.

Where does this lack of compassion come from? Is it because our authorities don’t more Africans to move to Finland? Take for example a minor who flees war-torn Somalia and gets political asylum. Everything is fine except for one very vital detail: the right to live with his or her parents.

Dana isn’t too old nor is she too young. She feels great emptiness and despair because she hasn’t seen her parents for seven years. Dana isn’t too happy with the social welfare system, which, according to her, eats away your self-esteem and opens you up to abuse.

I asked her if she could write something that would reveal her feelings and life in Finland. I got the following poem  by email from her that I edited in English. A lot of things have happened to Dana. She was once arrested and put in a police cell apparently for protesting against her detention at the social welfare office on Dagmaninkatu 6 in Helsinki:

R U racist or fascist? Ur guilty and a terrorist.

R U brave or a coward? Don’t you have any life why are you so cranky?

Leave my legs, hands alone…shame on u for being so ruthless and rabid

In this cold, hard and dark jail…oh God my heart is broken, pity me!

Why did I believe the words of my demons?? Why have I ended up here in a corner of my cell?

Why aren’t there any human here?? Why did my hope die in my spirit??

Come on ironic robot police and open this door…my race and yours are one, the same, awaken now…

My social workers fooled me and U in an instant…Stop the anguish and awaken for a second

Why can’t I find any doors here??? Why have I fallen here tired and all alone???

Why is the law against me and us??? Why is the color of my skin the crime, the sin? Who said these things???

Come and open ur two eyes at this moment…Don’t beat on my wings and feathers because I’m so tired

Katu, this Dagmarinkatu is pure agony, torture…Number 6 is an open sore, pain and a mirage in a sea of hopelessness.

Dana says that loneliness is the most difficult matters to adapt to in Finland.

Dana writes:

“I came to Finland in April 2008 from Turkey. I’m originally from Iran. I had to leave the country because there is no religious freedom. I was forced to flee the country to Turkey. I met some representatives from the United Nations who said I could go and live in Finland as a refugee.

It was spring when I arrived at Vaasa in an apartment where there was hardly any furniture, only a bed, table, chairs a pot, spoon, fork and knife, no TV; there were no curtains and they gave me 250 euros. The social worker said that money was for food and stuff I wanted to buy.

Feeling like the loneliest person on Earth in a foreign country, I wondered where I had ended up. I couldn’t believe it. I was totally and completely alone. I thought I could make friends but this wasn’t easy. People didn’t want to talk to me when I approached them. I asked my social worker if I could bring my family. I told her I could not stand living alone this way.

She didn’t leave with much hope. The social worker said that if I wanted to bring my parents to Finland I would have to pay their plane ticket and support them financially here. The social worker said I’d have to personally pay the application fees for my parents. My mother is very sick suffering kidney complications. The social worker made me feel hopeless because it sounded like bringing my parents here would be an enormous and expensive task.

But I need my parents by my side. It’s so difficult for me to live so faraway from them all alone.

Dana believes that all people have a right to live a peaceful life in a country where they aren’t persecuted

Almost immediately after I moved to Vaasa I enrolled in a Finnish-language course. At school, it didn’t take long to figure out that I was in the wrong place. My classmates were from Africa, Bosnia, Russia, Guatemala, Ghana, China and other countries. None, however, were from Iran.

I learned to speak Finnish pretty fast. I worked hard and did my homework diligently. But then things started to go sour at the school. All of the students in my class had a relative studying there like a mother, brother, sister or at least a friend from the same country. There were no Iranians at the school. I was all alone.

The African complained to the teacher about the racism she were facing in Vaasa. All I could do is think of my parents and how to bring them to Finland. I wasn’t interested in supporting her so she turned against me for that reason. I guess it was because I was all alone and tried to be a model student. I was better than anyone at school and learned Finnish faster than any of them.

I had a different perspective back then. I didn’t want any problems with people like the Finns and with the school staff. To make a long story short, I was called in by the principal and teacher and expelled from the school. The reason? Because I could not get along with my classmates.

I was shocked. I complained to the social worker who then called one of the teachers. The principle apparently kicked me out of the school to appease my classmates. Once the principle and teacher insulted me in front of the class in the presence of all the students. It was clear that I could not stay any longer  at the school.

Immigrants turn against each other. They do that in order to show the Finns that they are better than another immigrant.

I was only a few months at that school in Vaasa. I stuck around for a year and a half and started to go to Unicef. There were some foreigners there and the Finnish they taught was very elementary. It was too easy. The hardest part, however, was being alone. Nobody was there for me to help and support me.

A friend got me an apprentice job at a home for old people. I worked there for three months for practically nothing. It was hard and physically strenuous work. There were students working there as well. When I asked them how much they made, I discovered they made a lot more than I did. Imagine, I worked eight-hour shifts five days a week and got 180 euros per month! It’s not fair! People should not be allowed to work for free, like a slave.

What kind of foreigners am I? I like to see myself as a brave person who can spot racism and is sensitive enough to even scent it when a person looks at me. To understand my suffering is to understand the meaning of time. It’s time that I am losing, precious years of my life, of being without my parents and not even having a job in Finland.

Racists in Finland are the ones who are responsible for wasting my precious time, my golden time.

I tried everything but there wasn’t any hope. I thought it would be a good idea to move to Germany where I had relatives. I did go there with the intention of never returning to Finland but I couldn’t stay there. Germany wouldn’t give me a residence permit. So I returned to Vaasa and then after a short while moved to Helsinki.
